Cancer care in Jefferson is expanding to Greene County Medical Center. Dr Joseph Merchant, McFarland Clinic oncology and hematology, has been seeing oncology patients at the McFarland Clinic Jefferson office for a number of years. Beginning in February, he will relocate his outreach services from the Jefferson office to Greene County Medical Center. The change in location will allow patients to receive infusion and chemotherapy treatments in Jefferson.
“A cancer diagnosis can be devastating and we want to ensure we are able to support patients as much as possible throughout their treatment,” said Dr Laurie Connolly, Greene County Medical Center chief medical officer. “We are pleased to be able to partner with Dr Merchant and the McFarland Clinic to expand the available options for routine appointments and chemotherapy infusions. Having these services in Jefferson with Dr Merchant facilitates healing in a comfortable environment nearer to the patient’s home.”
Dr Merchant received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, and his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville and his fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center in Madison. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and the Iowa Medical Society. He joined the McFarland Clinic in 2002.
Dr Merchant will see patients at Greene County Medical Center two Wednesdays per month on a referral basis beginning February 5. Persons who want more information can call 515-386-2488.
